Pearly Trinkets and Floaty Woes: The Rosemont Flea Market with Leilani (Thriftaholic)

Last Sunday Leilani and I got up early to head out for a morning at the Rosemont flea market. But first, as I continue along my journey to finding a signature style, I knew to expect some stumbling. Well, here's my first big pothole...

I came across this gorgeous, wispy white top on sale at Anthropologie while visiting a friend in DC. Said-friend was majorly laid up in bed with the flu, so I decided to escape the quarantine of her apartment and get some fresh air. (And by fresh, I mean July-in-DC-good-lord-it's-muggy-and-gross-out-I'd-rather-be-in-quarantine. But I digress.)

I've been pining for some fresh, summer whites to wear on those hot, dog days of summer, and this top seemed to fit the bill. It was white, light, airy and didn't make me look totally pregnant, nor was it tight like a second skin. It had a pretty "plaid" pattern that gave it texture, was asymmetrical, and floaty. It even had pockets. So, check, check and check.

Here's where I become frustrated. The photo above is pretty much the only one out of dozens that I felt was flattering. The few below I'm not very fond of, but are passable.

Top: Anthropologie
Cami: J. Crew
Leggings: Target
Sunnies: Target
Wedges: Van Eli, a few years old
Necklace: Flea market in Rosemont, IL

In hindsight, it could have just been an off day for photographing, but when I uploaded this mini photoshoot to my computer almost all the pictures looked horrible. In particular, the top I was so in love with was making me look huge, like I had a bun in the oven. Blast you, white.

Was it just a bad day for photography? Perhaps: Leilani and I had woken up at the crack of dawn to go to the Rosemont Flea Market; it was blasted hot that day, creeping towards 100; we were in a bit of a food coma from brunch at  Kenala (bacon-chocolate waffles FTW); I was annoyed I couldn't find my favorite sunglasses to wear in this post; and it was about noon when these photos were taken (worst time ever to photograph, but we tried anyway).

Verdict? These photos aren't perfect, but that's ok. I had an awesome time crawling the flea market with Leilani, and there are worse things in life. Below is the carved mother of pearl necklace I got for $4...love! I also got a pair of earrings and another necklace, which I'll photograph for another post. I liked the idea of pairing white jewelry with the white outfit.

I love anything that's celestial themed. Suns, moons, and stars. We took these photos in a little "park" on my street that's really not much more than a vacant lot that was turned into a really pretty little garden. It's about the size of a postage stamp, but it is officially designated as a park.

Leilani looking super cute! She's a seasoned pro at thrifting, flea marketing, estate shopping and general vintage madness. We got to the Rosemont flea super early, since she said most of the good stuff goes quickly. I am the grasshopper to her Mr. Miyagi in the world of thrifting.  She brought her small camera to the flea market, but I knew it'd be too hot to want to lug around my larger one. Hopefully she post some pictures of the crazy cool stuff we saw there!

Love this ring of hers!

She already owned all these pieces, but I love them!

She poses like a pro.

Has anyone else gone to the Rosemont Flea Market and found some treasures?? Or where do you go for the best flea markets or thrifting?

It Was Too Hot to Wear This Outfit

Honestly, I don't know what I was thinking...it was about 90 degrees, and while this leopard shirt is sheer and airy, with the jeans and jersey vest it was overkill. And by overkill I mean hot as hell and I rolled up my jeans and shed the vest as soon as these photos were done.

How fun is this door?

I had another awesome time with Leilani last weekend, and she took me to some awesome vintage garage sales in the Pilsen area. Honestly, if you want to go thrifting in Chicago, go with this girl!

She matches the door perfectly.

I'm dying for a tooled leather bag like hers!

Doesn't she look gorgeous here??

Leilana definitely had a more lady-like vibe in this Anthro dress she got at a garage sale. I was, however, feeling more laid-back and boho (and sweltering...)

Leopard top: Talbots

OBLIGATORY TWIRL PICTURE:

Sadly, the light was almost gone by the time we got to twirling, so I couldn't get a very crisp shot. Next time!

It's Behind the Garage

I don't know what I'm going to do when the days get short again. And I know what will happen in the winter because it always happen: I will wake up for work and it will be dark. I'll spend the day in my cubicle with no windows, and then when I leave after work it will (still) be dark out. After New Years, I need to move to that northern region of Russian where they get sun 22 hours out of the day. Perfect--problem solved.

Sunnies: Fossil
Bag: Elliot Lucca
Top: bought from Kendi!
Cardi: J. Crew
Khakis: J. Crew
Sandals: Cordani

Pendant: bought in Australia
Chain: J. Crew

And now to introduce the photographer of my outfit pictures from above: my awesome new roommate Annie!

Reasons she rocks:
1) She helps me figure out what to wear, particularly for the Havaianas event I went to last week. She even let me borrow her dress to wear to the event!
2) A few years ago, she gave Tavi this awesome sweater because she thought she'd like it. How nice is that?
3) She gets really, really tan just by sitting in the sun for 5 min. It's like a super power that my Anglo heritage just can't comprehend...
4) She makes whipped cream. From scratch.

I Got My Flippy-Floppies

Hello all! Hoping everyone had an awesome 4th of July weekend!

Here are some photos from a really awesome event I attended last Thursday evening at North Ave Beach in Chicago. Havaianas hosted an awesome pop-up shop where you could customize your own Havaianas flip flops.

Emma of Tres Awesome with flip flops! I just about died over her lace skirt.
At the "bar" getting flip flops made! Kelly is in the hat to the left, waiting for hers, and she has a wonderful website you should check out!

Some fabulous Chicago bloggers!

This was my first pseudo-blogger-event, or a least an event where I got to meet a lot of other bloggers for the first time, particularly fellow Chicago bloggers! I was very excited to see some faces in person that I've been following for a while, and also meet some awesome new people! One of which is Leilani of Thriftaholic! Go check out the awesome finds of hers, she needs to teach me...

Leilani from Thriftaholic. I need her to mentor me in the art of thrifting, she's amazing!!
