30 for 30 Day 9: Pearls and Purple People Feet-er

I love these tights I got a TJ Maxx! They're two-toned with darker purple on the back of the legs. I decided to go for broke and throw on my purple shoes too.

I surprised myself with how much fun taking these photos was. And I couldn't narrow down my photo choice so I'm indulging myself and posting a bunch. I also love my vintage magnifying glass necklace that I got at a flea market this summer. I'll catch myself using it to make things bigger when I'm perfectly capable of reading them without glasses... my inner Sherlock Holmes makes me do it. You can find some really cool ones on eBay too!

I thought the gold magnifying glass would look good with pearls and more gold chain. It plays off the gold buckle/zippers of this skirt. :) What is your quirkiest, most unique piece of jewelry?

30x30 Day 8: Bright and brighter!

First off, thanks to everyone for the advice after my last post. I think my gut feeling was correct, and I should not go out of the house with those socks and that particular outfit. Thank goodness I didn't, and ripped them off right before leaving for work. How mortifying to leave the house looking like a yodeler from the knees down. ;)

This is my next outfit in my 30 for 30. I wanted something very colorful and bright because it was freezing this past week. And I like how chunky and rhinestone-y the headband it. This outfit was super comfy!

I love this vivid shade: it's so blue. It's by Velvet and was only $15 at TJ Maxx!

This badass ring is from Forever 21. Holler.

30x30 Day 7: I need some fashion advice from you guys!

Hello all! I'm hoping everyone celebrating Thanksgiving was able to roll themselves out of bed and out of their food comas today. And if you don't celebrate American Thanksgiving, and you still found yourself in a food coma--I tip my hat to you.

I'm trying to spend the next few days photographing some more of my 30 for 30 outfits. This one might be one of my favorites so far.

And as you scroll down to the bottom, I'll need your help with some accessorizing!

Plum ruffled tank top: Forever 21
Grey Cardigan: J. Crew
Black and white skirt: J. Crew
Skinny patent belt: Gap
Polka dot tights: J. Crew
Booties: J. Crew
Earrings: Cusp
Snake pendant: Francesca's

Ok, earlier this month I was inspired by Audi over at Fashion for Nerds when she put thigh-high socks on over her tights (and some awesome suede shorts). I agree with her that added the socks somehow made the whole outfit look a little less leggy but still super cute. When I shot these photos I didn't have any thigh-highs, but tried on a pair of aqua knee-high socks over my polka dot tights:

So my question is: Do I look ridiculous in these?? Do I need thigh-highs to make this work? Or do I just look like this or this? Please be honest: I need your advice!

Also, let's take a moment to look at this awesome necklace I fished out of the sale bin at Francesca's for $8. Holler.

Also, one last note before we end: A moment of silence is in order to commemorate the fact that I officially no longer work at J. Crew having finally found full-time employment. It's a been a blast, J. Crew: a memorable year and a half that I dressed mannequins in outfits I could never pull off, encountered some truly unique customers (I'm looking at you, woman who returns things with the tags still on 3 years later), Lysol-ed the Red Phones after sick people coughed into the receivers, dug through the return-to-J.Crew-warehouse bin for cashmere, stocked up on waaaay too many cardigans and too much jewelry, and learned to buy menswear for myself and not just my brothers. So thanks, J. Crew. Although I'm pretty sure you should be thanking me because mostly my entire paycheck was funneled back into your company because of the truly stellar discount you offer your associates. So instead, my closet and this blog thanks you. But I refuse to say 'orchid shadow' when referring to darker shades of purple. Now back to the show.

Things I'm Craving! Nov. 23

A quick comment concerning my 30 for 30... its still on. I haven't given up. I have outfit ideas out the wazoo in my head from my chosen 30 pieces, and have already worn a bunch to work...I just need to find the time to photograph them. I seem to be rapidly sliding behind the pack in posting, but think of it this way: when everyone else is done, and you're trying to cope with the anguish of no longer having 30 for 30's to follow, I will be there to bring up the rear. In style, of course.

In leu of a 30x30 post, I'm posting another installment of Things I'm Craving (which only requires me to pull photos, not shoot them)!

Burnt Red/Red-Brown Boots

Frye, on Zappos.com

Frye, on Zappos.com

Cole Haan, on Zappos.com

I love that these are not quite brown. These three are all flats, but I wouldn't mind having a little bit of a heel. I also like that they're a bit rugged-cowboy-looking. Which ones do you guys like best??

 A classic tuxedo jacket
Alexander McQueen, at Shopstyle.com

Bird by Juicy Couture Ellis tuxedo jacket, at Net-A-Porter.com

You can't go wrong with these classics. I would put these with a feminine silk blouse or dressy pants (like the ones below). I've wanting a tuxedo jacket for those occasions when you need to be that much more dressed up that just a blazer... 'cuz you know I go to black-tie affairs all the time.

 Velvet Skinny Pants/Leggings

Madewell, on Shopbop.com

J. Brand, at Saks.com
Luxe, and really fun for this holiday season! Not to mention warm and soft...

Actually, I would put all three of these things together...if I won the lottery, of course. What have you guys been craving?

30x30 Day 6

This is my very comfortable outfit for my last day of part-time work on Saturday. These stretchy pants are thicker than leggings and more wearable like cropped pants. Oh, and super comfy. Go to J. Crew and ask for the Pixie Pant, and they'll lead you to these babies.

Again, I love this belt. You'll probably be seeing a lot of it in the future.

Tunic: J. Crew
Black stretchy pants: J. Crew
Belt: ...don't remember
Purple suede loafers: Paolo
Scarf: a boutique named Lori's
Earrings: handmade, The Mustard Seed

And I'm still looking for advice from anyone on how I can best take photos indoors with this crappy artificial lighting. How can I improve my photos and indoor lighting this winter??

30x30 Day 5: Any Advice on Indoor Lighting? And Casual Friday is Casual

And yet, I'm posting on a Monday...did I just blow your mind? I thought so.

Playing catch up again, but I'm up to date on all the photos of my outfits through today, I just need to edit them. I need to seriously figure out how I'm going to do all my fashion photography inside and at night this winter. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom in this department? I can't be the only one struggling with the short day-light hours. Anyone with experience or suggestions on how I can photograph indoors without looking like I've photographed everything on a disposable camera, and then scanned the photos onto my computer like I did in 7th grade...? This next batch of photos is taken in a different room with different lighting than the first 4 days of this challenge, I suppose they look marginally better. Ignore the corner of the bed that dominates most of these pictures *facepalm*...

Anyway, style onward! Yes, its a very casual outfit, but heck, it was a Friday and it was probably the last day we'll have in Chicago this year where I can get away with rolling up my pants and not getting frostbitten ankles. I'm loving this military jacket, if you couldn't tell by my last several posts.

30x30 Day 4: Is it the weekend yet?

I'm feeling kind of lumberjack-chic in this. Oh yeah. This is a quick and comfy and I decided to add cute and feminine earrings since the shirt is actually from the men's department.

Shirt: J. Crew, men's department
Jeans: J. Crew
Belt: ?, I've had it for years!
Bag: Fossil
Boots: Tahari
Earrings: Target

And if anyone ever wonders why I have a ridiculous amount of clothing from one particular store, its because up until recently I've been working there for a year and a half. Going through my posts so far I'd say about 50-60% of my closet is from that one store. I'll give you a hint: the store name rhymes with "Ah-choo," and the employee is discount is just too good to not buy tons of stuff. Its like heroin: you can't stop. My whole paycheck would just funnel itself back into the store. >_<

30x30 Day 3!

I'm working on catching myself in this thing!

This Wednesday (day 3) was an absurd 68-70 degrees in Chicago, and I had to take advantage of such weather one last time by wearing a skirt and T shirt while forgoing a sweater and tights! *le gasp* It was pretty freakin' glorious out. But, because it is still technically fall, I added the brick red purse as my nod to the seasons.

T shirt: J. Crew
Skirt: hand sewn in New Zealand
Snakeskin flats: Me Too
Necklace: Express
Bag: Furla

I love, love, love this skirt. I bought it from an artist/clothes maker at a street fair in Christchurch, New Zealand. And its swishy. I took a lot of swishy photos...

I keep thinking that I could break down the pattern for myself and sew a colored version. Have any of you guys tried to make a replica of a piece of clothing you loved?

30x30 Day 2!

Good lord, its only Day 2 and I'm already behind...

But have no fear, because I am absolutely determined to complete this 30x30 challenge! Even if these posts are delayed, even if that results in several posts a day, even if I have to throw an outfit back on from the day before in order to photograph it--it will be done. That's my pledge to myself, as well as a personal challenge to learn how to multitask and better manage my time now that I am officially "adult" with a normal job and normal job schedule. I've been spoiled by late sleep-in times and many hours of wondering "what should I be doing with all this free time?" Well, no longer.

I looked back on day 1 and felt I had to up the ante. So I went for girly dresses with polka dots! Although its tough to see in some of these photos...Goodness how I love these tights! And we've had the weirdest warm weather in Chicago, so I figured I should get away with wearing this dress without a sweater for as long as I could.

I love doing feminine details with military themes!

Still working on that indoor light...this set might be an improvement.

30 for 30 Day 1

It has begun... *cue dramatic music*

Today marks a number of beginings, not least of all the 30 for 30 project. But today also marks my first official day as a gainful, full-time employee. With benefits. Holla'. Its taken a year and a half out of college, but I can successfully proclaim myself a card-carrying member of the 9-5 club. I'm very, very grateful to have landed this job, and while I have no idea if this path I've started down is really leading to my life's "true purpose", its certainly a start.

Anyway, on with the fashion. I took Kendi's advice and considered both weekends and my day job when picking my thirty pieces. Thankfully my office is mostly business casual, with professional business attire only on days when clients come to visit. So I'm able to dress up jeans and casual pants, and I threw in a blazer and skirt that could be dressed up or down. This outfit might not be the most exciting way to start off this month, but for my first official day at work I wanted to be a little more low-key. I'll  feeling it out as I go along...
Looking at these pictures now, I probably would have preferred to wear it with a shorter cardigan: the length of the shirt and the volume of the pants would probably be better suited to a less-long cardigan. Sadly, I didn't add one of those to my 30, so I will have to wait. I will also have to save the crazier outfits I've planned in my head for after this 30 for 30 challenge. :)

Bird-print shirt: Forever 21
Cardigan:
Necklaces: Star pendant was my mom's, and blue enamel pendant bought in Australia,
 originally from Iran ("Persian")
Earrings: J. Crew
Trouser jeans: J. Crew
Snakeskin flats: Me Too

One more thing...These photos are so grainy! Ew! My search for acceptable indoor lighting during the winter months continues. Its way past dusk when I get home from work. At least you guys get to see what the doors to my closet look like. Fancy dancy :)

My 30 for 30!

I'm very excited to be participating in Kendi's 30 for 30 closet remix project starting tomorrow! I've been studiously taking notes and scouring my closet for thirty essential pieces that I can mix and remix. When I started out making my list of clothes I looked down after number 10 and saw "black...black...black...more black." So I had to rethink my strategy and include some pops of color and fun patterns and how I might be able to wear them all together.

Here are my 30! The breakdown...

5 Basic tops/layering pieces:
Lacy cami: Jockey
Royal purple, ruffle tank: Forever21 (ack, the color is totally gone in this photo!)

4 Skirts:
Grey tweed skirt: handmade/sewn by me :) (Once I finish hemming it!)
Black and white print mini: J. Crew
Grey panel skirt: handmade/sewn by a vendor in New Zealand, street market
Black pencil skirt: Ralph Lauren, from Ralph Lauren outlet

4 Pants:
Black stretch skinny pant: J. Crew
Trouser jean: J. Crew

5 Pairs shoes:
Black flat boot: Tahari
Black suede bootie: J. Crew
Snakeskin flat: Me Too
Converse: um, Converse...
Purple low-heel loafers: Paolo

I'm excited to see what everyone else will be wearing! These photos were taken a little hastily, but I had to finish before the sun went down. You'll see all these pieces in detail as the month goes on anyway. I need to figure out where in my house I can take photos when I come home from work and they won't look too terrible with artificial lighting...Woe the winter months!
